Winter weather, MLK Holiday and upcoming events

Winter weather information and update on services
Winter weather is headed for Anna. The city is prepared for the wintery mix. Major roadways have been brined to reduce the adhesion of snow and ice to road surfaces; generators, fuel tanks and gas cans have been filled; and all other storm preparation has been completed.

The city provides updates on services and operations at www.AnnaTexas.gov/Winter. Please bookmark the page for ease of access. Also, updates will be provided on our Facebook page and Nextdoor account as needed.

Please note, our Nextdoor account is utilized for neighborhood specific messages. For example, if trash delays will only impact one or two neighborhoods, those will be targeted on Nextdoor with a customized message and will not be shared on other platforms.

Changes to normal operations as of Friday, Jan. 12

  • All park restrooms are closed until further notice.

Message from the National Weather Service - Fort Worth
The overall potential for wintry precipitation has expanded and increased, but amounts are still forecasted to remain relatively low. However, anything that falls will likely result in impacts given the very cold air that will already be in place. Timing for any wintry precipitation is Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. There is a medium to high chance of mostly snow near the Red River and a low to medium chance of freezing rain elsewhere. Impacts to travel, power, and broken tree limbs are all possible with this event.

FAQs
1. What can I do to help prevent frozen water pipes in my home?

  • Allow hot and cold water to run a thin stream the width of a pencil lead.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to expose pipes to heat within the house.
  • Keep the thermostat in your home set above 60 degrees.

2. What should I do to protect my outside water spigot / faucet from freezing?

  • Wrap exposed exterior pipes and faucets with foam insulation or a towel.
  • Remove garden hoses from outside faucets. Freeze sensors are required on all sprinkler systems to keep them from operating during icy weather.
  • Cover all openings around the foundation.

3. What should I do if one or more of my water pipes are frozen or I don’t have water?

Property owners are responsible for private water systems from the outside water meter into the home. If you have issues with your private plumbing system such as a frozen pipe you will need to contact a licensed plumber for assistance. Please contact the City of Anna at 214-585-7725 if your private water service needs to be turned off at the outside water meter.

Holiday Closures
City facilities will be closed Monday, Jan. 15 in honor of MLK Day. Trash and recycling routes will operate on a normal schedule.

Successful Coyote Backpack Project food drive

Today, volunteers helped sort and pack more than 100 meal kits for the Coyote Backpack Project. The Community Enhancement and Compliance Division orchestrated the food drive in honor of the National Day of Service. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day) is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.”

The Coyote Backpack Project provides meals to students on the free lunch program with meals to take home on the weekend. We are proud of our community for coming together and showing so much support. Thank you Anna neighbors!

High school students are encouraged to attend on Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Municipal Complex. Open to 10th-12th graders. Students sign up through their guidance counselors. Please reach out if you have any questions.
